Apart from snotter, yesterday seems to have been a bit of an Ibiza DJ day for Marcail. Aside from wandering around the house and garden on a photo shoot inspired by the James Blunt “Same Mistake” video, she got into the swing of it and threw some great shapes for the club dance floor, innit.
The last two days or so have been a lot better for us, thank goodness. I don’t know if it has been colic, or if we’ve just not been effective enough and clearing wind, but whatever the reason, Marcail has been more settled and less upset the last couple of days. One thing we have been doing is using Infacol whenever we feed her. Interesting stuff.

It seems to be a colloidal suspension and its purpose is to act as an anti-foaming agent in the baby’s stomach on the basis that if wind is caught up as milky foam, or foamy milk, then it will be hard to expel. Much easier if the wind and milk are clearly separated and then one can come out and leave the other behind. The syrup itself is a mix of Poly Di-Methyl Siloxane [PDMS] which is the material that makes up kitchen and bathroom sealant. This is mixed with silica gel, more commonly known as those little glass beads that soak up moisture in packaging for everything from binoculars to your DVD remote control. None of this is absorbed by the body, so apart from keeping the foam at bay it just slides on through and out the other side.

In other news: Last Sunday we headed down to Peebles again see Mum. Her neighbour, Jean Johnson, popped over with the most wonderful blanket that she has been knitting for Marcail. It’s a patchwork of alternating squares in off white and a dusty pink colour; really nice. Jean is an absolute diamond and someone that I’ve known since we moved to the Peebles house when I was eight. I’ve mentioned her before: amazing garden and on her third artificial hip. This time we got a photo of She was next in line for a pose holding our little darling.

The last couple of days we’ve started to notice the next real change in Marcail. She’s starting to smile at us. It seems to be deliberate now, not just the random practice smiles that we have been getting up until now. She’s so much more alert and interactive too. When she’s awake, which she is a lot more, she is actively looking and taking stuff in, just drinking it all up. Tummy time is getting a bit more interesting for her, although she still gets frustrated pretty quickly; I guess with the lack of a view and not being able to lift her torso yet, though she can lift her head well.
We’re starting to hear real vocalisation noises now too. They’re still pretty occasional, and we’re not getting the gurgling googling noises. But there’s no mistaking it, she’s now a baby and not a newborn!
