Run free big dog, and chase those eternal squirrels to your heart’s content.
The time came when going on had lost its meaning and was just too hard. The ravages of the years on mind and body made the decision inevitable, but no less difficult or painful for that inevitability. So let us remember the good times from nearly fourteen years of sharing this planet with a walking ASBO in the shape of a shedding cloud of white fur.
Day One
Kamu and his sister having arrived in Falkirk. She was with us overnight before her onward train journey to Peterhead the next day.
First weigh in
If only we knew then what we know now
Nap time
Do not be deceived by the ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ appearance.
Becoming fast friends
Kids and puppies are like strawberries and cream. Particularly appropriate in this case given their respective coat colouration
Loves it!
That is the worst sort of thick, stinking, estuarine mud that you can imagine. Having run out into it, then lying down, before coming back. “What do you mean you’re not impressed with my new camouflage?” That was a memorable car ride home.
Mugged by two “staffies”
Back home after an unprovoked attack by two dogs in the park, oh and an £800 vet bill to boot. The worst of the mauling was around his ear and he very, very, nearly lost his left eye.
Small planting bed + samoyed puppy = !
The more serious infraction was when he was caught chewing on the memorial magnolia in the front garden that we had only just planted in memory of Debs’ father.
It’s a dog’s life
Callendar Woods, his favourite place.
Trotting contentedly along a path through the bracken and pine forest round the back of Callendar Woods. Quite probably after a happy time chasing squirrels and deer, and getting half the plantation caught up in his tail and trousers for his humans to remove.
Having won 5th prize in a beauty competition
We rocked up at an agricultural show on Harris, and they happened to have an all comers category in the dog show. Due to some dreadful cheating by other entrants (things like grooming and even washing their dogs) he only got 5th place. He was pretty modest about the whole thing as you can see.
After the ducks and the fear
After chasing after the ducks in the sea, getting stuck on a rock, then finally plucking up the courage and making the leap back into the waves it seems to be a relief to be almost back to the pack on the beach. Numpty.
He could look like a fine specimen, occasionally. On this occasion it was with his mamma at Neist Point, Isle of Skye
A lady and samoyed on a concrete walkway through a grassy area
Black Cuillin of Skye
A wee break whilst heading up the path to Coire Lagan. Debs found it was handy having a sled dog along for the trip. Being pulled up large sections of the path.
Coire Lagan, Black Cuillin, Isle of Skye
Just chilling in this photo. We thought he was a goner at one point. He ran after some sheep which were dots in the distance. When he (finally) got back he collapsed and started crying. We thought he was having some sort of heart attack of something. Turned out to be more likely a stitch or scary breathlessness.
In the mountains with the Scheuerls
All together in Coire Lagan on an unusually clear day for the Black Cuillin
Puppies and kids are a match made in heaven, and Kamu with Marcail was no exception. That baby chuckle of pure joy is the best sound on earth. We were sure his bark would deepen and mellow with age. Sadly we were wrong on both counts.

I am so sorry to hear about Kami! I wish you all peace knowing what a fabulous life you gave him and vice versa. I’m thinking of you and know you’ll find some good times to remember him!
